Bright Futures Scholarship Program

In Florida, the Bright Futures Scholarship Program provides two primary awards: the Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) award and the Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS) award. These scholarships are intended to encourage talented students to pursue post-secondary education within the state by covering certain educational costs at Florida institutions. Here are the requirements for both awards as of the latest update:

Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) Award (100% Tuition and Applicable Fees)

Academic Requirements:
• A minimum weighted GPA of 3.5 in the 16 college-preparatory courses as specified by the Florida Department of Education.

• A minimum score on college entrance exams: either 1330 on the SAT or 29 on the ACT.

 

Service Hours:

• Completion of at least 100 service hours as approved by the school or community agency.

Additional Criteria:

• Must be a Florida resident and a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.

• Enrollment in a degree or certificate program at an eligible Florida public or independent postsecondary institution.

• Completion of the Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) by August 31 of the high school graduation year.

Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS) Award (75% Tuition and Applicable Fees)

Academic Requirements:
• A minimum weighted GPA of 3.0 in the same 16 college-preparatory courses.

• A minimum score on college entrance exams: either 1210 on the SAT or 25 on the ACT.

Service Hours:
• Completion of at least 75 service hours as approved by the school or community agency.

Additional Criteria:
• Must meet the same residency and citizenship requirements as the FAS award.

• Must also enroll in an eligible program and complete the FFAA by the specified deadline.

Both scholarships require maintaining a certain college GPA to renew the award annually, with the FAS requiring a 3.0 and the FMS a 2.75 GPA in post-secondary coursework. The Bright Futures Scholarship Program thus incentivizes academic excellence and civic engagement among Florida’s students, providing substantial financial support to those who meet its rigorous criteria.
